Q: How come that the feedback is so low with QirraSound™?

A: Feedback comes from phase shifts where the return signal is 180 degrees out of phase in relation to the main signal, frequency component by frequency component. Since all QirraSound™ loudspeakers have very little phase shift, feedback will be much lower than using classical loudspeakers. That does not mean that it is impossible to have feedback, since the room can have reflexes and other components can introduce destructive phase shifts. In demonstrations, it has been possible to have the person with a microphone right in front of the QirraSound™ loudspeaker despite the large room being filled with quality sound to the last seat. Many listeners and performers are stunned in regards to this ability! By using a QirraSound™ system, feedback will always be lower than with classical systems and the sound quality is amazing. With less feedback challenges it is easier for the performers to move on stage and the sound engineer has more freedom. We have many testimonials in regards to this.

Q: Why is it so hard to blow a QirraSound™ system out?

A: Classical loudspeakers have resonances that add to the heat build-up in the speaker elements. Since QirraSound™ has minimized this, the speaker elements do not get as hot as for a classical system. We have also made sure that the excessive heat is distributed properly, avoiding temperature gradients that could create challenges. All this does not imply that it is impossible to “blow them,” but it is very hard! QirraSound™ is made to last!

Q: Why are they heavy?

A: When designing loudspeakers, the magnet weight (efficiency) plus the sturdiness of the loudspeaker box must be excellent. If not, the performance will be degraded. QirraSound™ has a very high-end sound quality. That adds weight. Also, every loudspeaker has two woofer elements, which represents a heavy part of the loudspeaker. We have done everything we can to decrease weight without impacting the sound quality and ruggedness. Some loudspeaker manufacturers introduced Neodymium magnets to cut back on weight. Today, China owns more than 90% of the mines and the price has more than ten-folded in the last ten years. Hence, we do not use such a magnetic material since it would further increase the price. If weight is a huge issue, we could make a model with Nedymium magnets. As of yet, this has not been needed.

Q: Can they be flown?

A: Yes, they can be flown. They also have pole stand holes and handles. Consult our sales team for further information.

Q: Can you make QirraSound™ into an array system?

A: The intent with a QirraSound™ system is to have a great and even sound distribution, even outdoors. Hence, the need for an “array-type” system has been very low. We have handled outdoor applications for large arenas with only 2+2 loudspeakers (2 for stage and 2 for the public) with excellent results. The sound levels in front of the loudspeakers were not painful and that is typical for a QirraSound™ system. Theoretically, we could put them into an array solution but it would take some more advanced signal processing since each box does not behave as the classical point source and there would be very little to gain. Therefore, for most applications, this would not be needed when using the QirraSound™ system concept. No application we have entered has required it yet, on the contrary!

Q: Why is the cost that high?

A: All QirraSound™ loudspeakers use a 2-element woofer design that is patented. The two elements add extra cost. On top of that, all components are high-grade and boxes are very sturdy. Hence, the extra cost! However, the performance of the loudspeakers cannot be compared to classical loudspeakers. The speech intelligibility, clarity and sound distribution is in its own class. Also, the scaling factor is often 10:1. In one application in the USA, their current installation had 340 loudspeakers but with QirraSound™ only 17 loudspeakers were needed and the end result was even better. By using QirraSound™, the cost/speaker is higher but then large savings on travel/hauling (van instead of truck and fewer persons), installation time, cabling, amplifiers etc will be accomplished.

Q: Where have QirraSound™ systems been used?

A: We have a substantial list of demos in Sweden (Europe) and the USA with photos, description of the application and the outcome. Contact us if you are interested in the document. Sometimes, testimonials are included.

Q: Can QirraSound™ loudspeakers be delivered in a “weatherproof” design?

A: Yes, QirraSound™ can be provided in a weatherproof design. QirraSound™ can also be delivered in a completely white design, all components being white. Consult our sales team for further information.

Q: Warranty and service.

A: QirraSound™ is delivered with a 5 years limited warranty on the speakers. For service and installation, please contact us. We have a network of expert groups that we work with than can help out with installation, consulting and expert advice on acoustics, sound engineering etc.

Q: Are there other sizes?

A: With QirraSound™, very few models and sizes are needed. The current speaker models cover a vast range of applications. They are not sensitive to what music material is being used or if the sound levels are high or low – they sound the same! Hence, we need very few models and that has been the strategy in the design of the QirraSound™ series.

Q: It seems that the low frequency sound behind the speaker is lower than for classical speakers. Is that correct?

A: Often, the loudspeaker box is not sturdy enough and hence, the “box” will radiate sound in more directions than just the element itself. That will impact sound quality and “blur” the sound since there are many “sound sources”. Our loudspeaker boxes are very sturdy and do not “move”. Therefore, it sometimes feels as less sound behind them but the sound is coming from the speaker element, not from the box, and that is how it should be.

Q: What is the maximum Peak and RMS power ratings for the loudspeakers.

A: Peak and RMS power ratings are highly correlated to signal type and duration of the signal/music. At tests performed at NASA JSC, the speakers could handle more than 1 kW (peak readings) for more than 30 minutes. The input signal was pink noise for the full bandwidth and the SPL was more than 120 dB RMS. 120 dB RMS corresponds to 500W RMS power. The peak power values depend on the crest factor in the driving signal. Often, for pink noise, it is 4:1 and then the peak values would have been at 2 kW. How much we can handle, we do not know. We have not fried the speakers yet.

Q: What is the maximum SPL that the speakers can produce?

A: This number is calculated from the sensitivity of the speaker. For an Odin loudspeaker, the sensitivity is 93 dB@1m, 1W. Since the speaker is rated at 1000W, that adds 30 dB to the 93 dB. Hence, the maximum SPL is 93+30 dB = 123 dB. The same goes for all the other speakers. For the speakers rated at 5 kW, that would add about 40 dB. Hence, the Thor II can produce 97+40 dB=137 dB SPL. Our intent is not to produce high SPL but excellent sound quality. Therefore, we seldom need to push the speakers to their limits. Classical loudspeakers will “scratch your face.” Even at higher SPL, QirraSound™ does not do that. Sound engineers need to be “re-trained” not to increase SPL in search for that “scratch feel” in your face. We have all these courses. Q: Why does QirraSound™ use ring tweeters instead of horns?

A: Sound quality and speech intelligibility is paramount for a QirraSound™ system. Hence, the high quality and patented ring radiator that we use fits our mission. In general, horns act like an “impedance transformer” in between the actuator itself and the air. The horn thus helps create more sound (lesser driver or actuator), but the price is that it creates amplitude ripple and a directional sound pattern. None of that are “features” that would fit a QirraSound™ system approach.
